Physical fitness is important to residents at Aberdeen Village. Staying active can help prevent or lessen heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, dementia and more.

No matter your physical condition, you can take steps to improve your health. Numerous research studies show that it is possible for older adults to maintain or improve their strength, flexibility and physical conditioning.

Here are some examples:

  • When we’re strong enough, we can stand from a chair without help from others or lift a grandchild. Strength training results in stronger muscles.
  • Flexibility allows us to get dressed without assistance and reach for things on a shelf. Stretching aids in flexibility.
  • Being physically active can help you stay fit enough to keep doing the things you like as you get older. Aerobic exercise, like walking, can help build your endurance and overall physical conditioning.

Wellness Activities

The Centers for Disease Control cites a New Zealand study that found women 80 and older had 40 percent fewer falls with strength and balance training. Research shows strength training increases bone density and lowers the fracture risk in women older than 50.

Exercising also provides similar improvements in depression as anti-depressant medications. It isn’t known if this is because people feel better when they’re stronger or if strength training produces a helpful biochemical change in the brain. Our rehabilitation experts tell us it is most likely a combination of the two. When older adults participate in strength training programs, their self-confidence and self-esteem improve, which has a strong impact on their overall quality of life.

If you haven't been active in a while, be sure to visit with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Aberdeen Village residents have an opportunity to take part in a wide variety of individual and group activities. From daily exercise and fitness classes to weekly canasta and domino games. From scheduled lunches at area eateries to shopping trips, ice cream socials and monthly birthday parties. From Bible study and group worship services to volunteer opportunities with Victory in the Valley, Warm Hearts, Kansas Food Bank and others. A full calendar of scheduled activities and events help keep our residents active, healthy and fully engaged in the community and the world.

At Aberdeen Village, we offer an indoor swimming pool with water aerobics classes and free swim time for those who prefer a more solitary work-out.

Take a stroll around our pond on our walking path, or practice your shot on our putting green.
