Aberdeen Village residents have some newly refreshed spaces where they can go to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Outdoor life is abundant on the Aberdeen campus. We have walking trails, a putting green, a pond with a fountain and numerous flower and vegetable gardens, but there doesn’t seem to be anything quite like spending time on the patios.

Ellen Petelin, life enrichment assistant, and her sister Elisha McGuire worked evenings and weekends to get the patio planters ready for planting.

They cleaned out the old plants and worked in the fresh soil for the new plants.

Ellen and Life Enrichment Director Sandra Barnes picked out plants that would work well on our neighborhood patios and front entrances. Each area has its unique needs. Ellen and Sandra carefully considered the amount of daily sunshine the plants need through the summer months. Ellen researched which plants do best in sun and heat and how to take care of them. She also wanted plants that would keep blooming throughout the summer so that our residents could enjoy their colors every day,

Ellen and her sister came in during their time off to finish the patio projects. They did an awesome job, and she is keeping them looking nice by watering them. Ellen has also taught residents how to water when she is not here.

Residents from all areas enjoy the patios. They are used for many different things such as cookouts, tea and cookie time, cards, music trivia, chatting over coffee in the morning, and visiting with neighbors, friends and families. For many, the patios are an opportunity to relax, take in a little fresh air and bask in the sun. One thing is for sure, our residents have great spaces to choose how they get to spend their day!
