Keep turning new pages

In honor of National Read a Book Day on Sept. 6, Aberdeen Village is exploring ways to help you incorporate more reading into your life. Here are some fun ways to get back into or find a little more time for reading:

Read a little bit at a time. The wonderful thing about reading is that you can do it on your own schedule! It doesn't have to be for hours on end. It could just be a little bit here and there. Whenever you are bored or waiting on something (or someone), just pick up your book and read!

Keep a book in your bag. If you carry a bag with you, bring your book along for the ride! That makes it a lot easier to read a little bit at a time if you always have a book with you.

Check out audiobooks. Do you like to read but just aren't able to see the fine print as easily anymore? There are many audiobooks that you can listen to, and they are in all types of formats. There are books on tape, CDs or even apps on your phone. AudioBooks.com is a good place to start.

Choose books you like. That may sound too easy, but don't feel pressured to keep reading a book you aren't enjoying. There is something to be said for trying new genres or authors. But I usually try three chapters at least, and if I'm still not getting into it, then I'll move on to something else.

Read before bed. Reading can actually relax your brain. For some people, it helps make them sleepy. So even if it's just a few pages, that's progress!

When you're busy or stressed, reread books. Picking up a book you love can be like a conversation with an old friend. It can be very comforting to reread one of your favorites. Give it a try!

Start or join a book club. It can be so much fun to discuss books you're reading with others. It can be a way to make new friends also! It helps keep you accountable to reading, too. Still, it should be fun and not a chore. Make sure you enjoy yourself.
